Text Box: Rockport Volunteer Fire Department (RVFD) personnel were busy with their annual “Fill the Boot” fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Saturday, Aug. 21. Volunteers collect donations at the intersection of Business Highway 35 and Austin Street and at the entrance to the Rockport Beach Park.

The drive raised more than $1,120, which adds to the almost $10,0000 the RVFD has raised during its five-year partnership with MDA. The money directly serves more than 1,000 families in Rockport and surrounding communities.

Text Box: A fire started in the engine of this 1998 Chevy Lumina as owner Adam Dubose was driving home at about 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25. The 25-year-old man said as he was driving, he saw smoke and what he believed to be flames coming out from under the hood. He stopped and popped open the hood, at which time the flames shot up. He then grabbed a fire extinguisher from his trunk, but that did not douse the flames. He ran over to the Rockport School and staff members there gave him another extinguisher, but that also did not put out the fire.

In the meantime someone had called 911 and firefighters were en route. Dubose said he had just filled the tank with gas. He noted the vehicle has been in his family for a number of years and there has never been a problem with it. He has no idea why the engine caught fire. Rockport and Fulton volunteer fire departments arrived and extinguished the blaze.

The vehicle was a total loss. Dubose’s mother said they had just purchased the registration tags that morning.

FIREMAN'S PRAYER

When I am called to duty, God
whenever flames may rage,
Give me the strength to save some life
Whatever be its age.

Help me to embrace a little child
Before it’s too late,
Or some older person
from the horror of that fate.

Enable me to be alert
And hear the weakest shout,
And quickly and efficiently
put the fire out.

I want to fill my calling
and give the best in me,
To guard my neighbor
And protect his property.

And if according to Your will
I have to lose my life,
Please bless with Your protecting hand

 My children and my wife
